Homemade Animal Crackers

Yep, we went there.

I’ve had the cutest set of miniature animal cookie cutters begging for my creative side to give them a shot for a few years, but never have I had such a great use for them until now.

I saw the idea for homemade animal crackers on another site, but tweaked the recipe a bit to make it more my own and to include the glaze, of course!

Livy is so thrilled about these cookies! We are giving them as Christmas gifts to her friends and teachers along with a jar of homemade hot chocolate mix.

Animal Crackers

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup margarine, softened
  • 4 tablespoons buttermilk

Oven: 400

Grind oats in the blender or food processor until fine.Β  Add flours, salt and baking soda, mix.Β  Add butter and pulse until small crumbles remain. Add honey, vanilla and buttermilk, and mix until a dough forms.

Shape dough into a disk and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out dough between 2 sheets of waxed paper. Cut cookies and place on a baking sheet.

Bake 5 minutes or until edges brown slightly. Watch closely!

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 TBSP milk or water
  • food coloring

Mix all, spread on cookies, add sprinkles!

The glaze will harden when dry.

and for good measure, here’s a picture of my sweet boy and me:
